Dramatic Protégées
Dramatic Protégées (students entering 6th through 9th Grades)
Cost: $375 for three weeks.
Dates: June 13 – July 1 (Mondays through Fridays)
Times: 9:00am-2:30pm.
Offerings: All students will participate in a daily Theatre Fundamentals class. In addition, each student will select two of the following program tracks (see below for program descriptions):
- Shakespeare
- Musical Theatre
- Improvisation
- Action Movie Making
Schedule:
9:00-9:10am = Morning Announcements
9:10-10:00am = Theatre Fundamentals
10:00am-12:00pm = Morning Track
12:00-12:30pm = Lunch Break
12:30-2:30pm = Afternoon Track
Recital: Each program track (except Theatre Fundamentals) will be expected to produce a 20 minute recital piece, to be performed at a public recital on the DHT stage on Friday, July 1, at 7:00pm. Admission is free.
Curriculum (Program Descriptions):
Theatre Fundamentals. All staff teachers will share responsibility for this class. This class will focus on teaching fundamental dramatic performance skills, including:
- Vocal projection/articulation.
- Physical presentation skills.
- Body control.
- Stage picture.
- Character skills.
- Vocal expression.
- Movement and tableaux.
- Vocal technique.
- Operative Words.
- Objectives and tactics.
Shakespeare. This class will teach students how to work with classical and verse texts, while working towards a classic Shakespeare production.
Musical Theatre. Students will learn vocal technique and dance skills as they prepare a musical performance.
Improvisation. This class will focus on spontaneity, creativity, teamwork, and the skills needed for improvisational acting. The class will include short form improv, long form improv, musical improv, and improvising on camera.
Action Movie Making. This exciting program will combine stage combat choreography with the film making process. Students will learn basic fight choreography skills, and then apply them to the scripting, filming, and editing of their own short action films.
Size: All classes will have a soft cap of 12 students. However, all classes will be advertised as having a hard cap of 15.

- A recital performance on the DHT stage
- One Free Ticket to a DHT production
Emergent Actors Scholarships
The DHT Board of Directors has approved and is pleased to offer a limited number of scholarships to talented kids ages 11 to 14 for the Young Actors’ School program Dramatic Prodigies beginning the week of June 13th. This scholarship subsidizes half of the total tuition, reducing the cost of this acclaimed program down to only $187.50. To qualify, kids must have prior performing experience in any form, acting, dancing, singing, etc. To apply email to mrideout@drapertheatre.org and include a short paragraph detailing the child’s or children’s (this scholarship is available to multiple children in the same household) past performing experience and why they would be a good candidate(s) for this scholarship. All applications must be received by Sunday, June 12th at 5:00pm. Scholarships will be awarded after after the review process and families will be contacted by June 13th.
Needs base scholarships
For young aspiring actors who qualify, DHT Board of Directors is offering Needs-Based Scholarships. These scholarships are determined on a case-by-case and can cover up to the total tuition for the program. These scholarships are based on the financial need of the family, and are being offered for the June 13th Dramatic Prodigies program. These scholarships allow children who desire to either get into acting, or perfect their dramatic skills the opportunity to attend this acclaimed program for a fraction of the cost! The application process and the award of the scholarship are strictly confidential. Someone from the theater will contact you Monday June 13th. All applications must be turned in by Sunday, June 12th at 5PM.
